Bookish Notions is an independent bookstore founded in January 2025 in Media, Pennsylvania. Owner Allison Anderson always dreamt of opening a bookstore, and after a full career in education and college admissions, she turned that dream into a reality, finding the perfect location right in the middle of charming State Street. She lives in the area with her husband and their bookish cats.
Bookish Notions is home to a wide variety of books and bookish gifts—including new releases, beloved classics, and something for every reader to enjoy—and proudly serves as a warm gathering place for book clubs, local author talks, and other exciting events that cater to Media's diverse community. In this inclusive space, children and adults can see themselves reflected in the stories that fill our shelves.
The name Bookish Notions was inspired by Allison's grandfather, Dan Hammer, one of her all-time favorite people. He nicknamed Allison "Book" as a kid because she always had a book in hand, eager for someone to read to her. Over the years, Allison loved discussing many topics with her "Poppy," and he epitomized an open mind, keen intellect, insatiable curiosity, and boundless compassion. Poppy was also a business owner, and he demonstrated what being an ethical business person could look like. He owned a dressmaker supply business in Manhattan, selling items like needles, thread, and buttons... otherwise known as notions! A notion can also mean an idea that is still forming, a very relevant concept for a bookstore. Although Poppy passed away before Allison started preparing to open this business, she chose the name Bookish Notions, in part, to always be reminded of her grandpa and how he lived his life.
